Should we move Microsoft 365 away from GoDaddy?

Short answer

If your organization has grown since you bought Microsoft 365 through GoDaddy, usually yes. GoDaddy-provisioned accounts are set up in a way that can limit your administrative control and access to some security features. Moving to direct Microsoft or partner licensing gives you full control. Your email and files stay put during the move.

Draft · pending expert review

Buying Microsoft 365 with your domain name made sense when you were small. The catch is that GoDaddy sets up these accounts so that GoDaddy, not you, sits between you and some of Microsoft's administration tools.

Why it matters as you grow

  • Some admin and security settings may be limited or harder to reach
  • Support runs through GoDaddy instead of an IT partner who knows your environment
  • Licensing options are narrower, so you may pay for the wrong plan

What moving involves

The account is separated from GoDaddy ("defederated"), users are given new sign-in credentials, and licenses move to Microsoft directly or through a partner. Your mailboxes, OneDrive, and SharePoint content stay where they are.

What your people notice

Planned well, very little: a password reset and a morning of help desk support.
