When should we move from QuickBooks to Business Central?

Short answer

Consider it when QuickBooks has become the bottleneck: multiple entities or locations, inventory or project costing it can't handle, month-end close that depends on spreadsheets, or data you retype into other systems. Business Central is Microsoft's business management platform. It costs more to implement, so the move should solve a real operational problem.

Draft · pending expert review

QuickBooks is excellent for what it was built for. The question is whether your organization has outgrown it.

Signs you've outgrown QuickBooks

  • Multiple companies or locations that need consolidated reporting
  • Inventory, manufacturing, or project costing beyond what QuickBooks handles well
  • A month-end close held together by spreadsheets
  • The same data typed into QuickBooks and your operational systems

A note on QuickBooks Desktop

Intuit has stopped selling most QuickBooks Desktop editions to new customers, so many organizations are choosing between QuickBooks Online, Desktop Enterprise, and a move to a platform like Business Central.

Before you move

Map how information and money move through your organization first. The right system is the one that fits those flows, and an integrated QuickBooks Online setup is sometimes the better answer.
