If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All

The Matrix could be both real and kill us all.

This is a thought provoking work, written by AI researchers, introducing and wrestling with the challenge of "AI Alignment". This is the idea that we need guadrails to make sure that AI is helpful, not harmful to humans. This goes beyond, "Sally in accounting lost her job because of AI" and extends to "We're all dead because AI expansion boiled off the oceans".

I personally think that some of the ideas are a bit of a stretch but the thought of a super intelligent "machine" looking to turn humans into power plants or to simply prefer not competing with us in general is not illogical.

The short version -- super intelligence will outpace we humans, build out hard-to-cool data centers, create a real energy/heating concern, boil off the oceans, and then we're toast, quite literally.

We have a hard enough time managing things like school boards, HOAs, and nuclear war heads. As a community of humans, we can't even agree on what is or is not terrorism or hate speech. I am not so confident that we can have adequate guardrails around AI, so again, these concerns are not illogical.

But, we'll probably find a way to do ourselves in by more traditional means before the datacenter turns the Atlantic into a bubble bath.
