The Motive

Man, these kinds of books are tough, because you see yourself in both the good and the bad more often than not.

The Motive is a great listen, and at 2x speed on the Audible app, it was a bit over an hour and perfectly outlines the difference between a Reward driven leader versus a Responsibility driven leader. Or that is what I picked up in my drive-by listen.

A Reward-driven leader is someone who picks and chooses which parts of the business they want to engage in and is somewhat hands off with respect to other aspects of the business. They "deserve to be here" and don't necessarily do the dirty-work of being the leader.

A Responsibility-driven leader is someone who does the hard work of denying perhaps what they might "like" to work on and instead continually BOTH leads and manages their team. By developing the people and repeatedly reinforcing the values and direction of the organization, they win, together.

Man, these kinds of books are tough, because you see yourself in both the good and the bad more often than not.

What is challenging for me personally is the energy it takes to manage my expectations. Here is what I mean. I spend a lot of time being the Responsibility-driven leader, but I don't make room for it on my calendar because I don't spend enough time planning to do that kind of work. I get energy from making stuff, writing code, writing articles, moving some tangible thing forward. Those "other" things are even more important, but I don't always walk away from those time and energy investments feeling the same sense of "accomplishment". So, in many ways, I am still stuck as a "reward-driven" leader, to use Lencioni's language. Thank heavens God isn't done with me yet!
